Sruti Hasan Biography
Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born on January 28, 1986 in Chennai, India. Her parents are noted actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika. Her younger sister Akshara represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing. Haasan studied at Abacus in Chennai and moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew’s College.
She shifted her focus to cinema and music, and eventually travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai. She has also had rhinoplasty to alter the appearance of her nose early in her film career. Shruti Hassan is an Indian singer, actress and music composer. Shruti has appeared in a few Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.
Singing Career
Shruti Haasan started her career as a singer and later turned to acting. She made her singing debut at an age of six when she sang for the veteran music composer Ilaiyaraaja. Her first song was featured in her father Kamal Hassan’s film ‘Thevar Mahan’. Her first Hindi song was featured in ‘Chachi 420’ directed by Kamal Hassan. She again sang for her father’s critically acclaimed film ‘Hey Ram’ for which she sang the Hindi and Tamil versions of the song Rama Rama with her father, Kamal Hassan.
Shruti Haasan sang along with veteran singer K. J. Yesudas for the film En Mana Vaanil (2002) under Ilaiyaraaja’s music. She’s also worked done work with Gautham Menon for his Vaaranam Aayiram where the composition was by Harris Jayaraj. Shruti (in the year 2008) was busy wrapping up her debut album (untitled) where she has not only sung the tracks, but has also composed and written them herself! This album was to be released somewhere in 2009. She has also sung a track for her own movie Luck. In September 2010 saw Shruti collaborating with Dave Kushner and the project was for the film titled Hisss. The lyrics for this track were written by Shruti and it was a Whilst Kushner composition…. Shruti also sang this track and featured in the promotional video.
Acting Career
After pursuing a career in composing music, singing and acting, but she has also entered into modeling. She appeared in the Frappe! magazine of September 2007 and in Verve.
Shruti’s debut in Bollywood came with a film titled Luck where she was paired opposite /Imran Khan and which was a Soham Shah film. However, despite the film gathering much publicity prior to release, it became a critical and commercial flop.
She made her Telugu debut in January 2011, acting opposite Siddharth and the film was titled Anaganaga O Dheerudu, which is a Prakash Kovelamudi (son of director K. Raghavendra Rao) direction. This movie was a Walt Disney Pictures co-production, yet it turned out to be unsuccessful commercially.
In mid 2010, Shruti Haasan was signed by A. R. Murugadoss to star opposite Surya Sivakumar in his next film 7aam Arivu, and the film’s shoot began in June later that year. Shruti played Subha Srinivasan, a young scientist in the film, who hopes to re-activate the genes of 5th century Buddhist monk Bodhidharma and her performance in the film won appreciation from critics. The film was a hit in the box office.
Shruti Haasan has also done a voice over for a HIV/AIDS teaching animated software tutorial that has been created by TeachAIDS (a non-profit organization).
